Is there any alternative to using a car battery to power this? I have to do all my racking in the kitchen - with obvious limitations! Could something like a mobile phone charger be used instead? I'm a complete novice with anything 'lectricul!

Quick update guys, well I bottled the merlot mid December and as my first ever wine kit I'm happy to say it really is quite drinkable, so much so that there is only about half a dozen bottles left of the original 30! I've just bottled another 30 , this time Beaverdale Barolo, and as I counted 24 extra empty bottles I've got a 30 bottle Winexpert vintners reserve chianti just started.(thought I'd try something different from Beaverdale)
I'm going to leave the merlot now until June/July when I really expect it to be outstanding.
With degassing, I feel my method of taking a few demijohns 3/4 filled, and shaking the crap out of them for a few mins, then whipping and shaking the carboy until tired(about 5 mins or the battery runs out on the drill) twice a day for 2 days seems to do it ok, and all the videos on YouTube show people being too gentle. As my HBS owner/chief advisor keeps telling me, you don't worry about oxidisation on any wine where the alc. is more than 5%, so beat it up as much as u like!
I may do my own YouTube vid one day to dispel all the oxidisation myths and help out newbies, as I needed on my first attempt!
Thanks for all the advice on here also guys, I've saved loads of money, and really enjoyed it
Matt
