  • Pressure barrel for wine making

I have just bought a 30 bottle Muntons Premium Cellar Home Wine Kit 6.8kg wine kit from Wilkos for £18.50. This seems to be a good deal. My question is: they also had a 23 ltr pressure barrel for £11. It hasn't got a hole for a bung but would release any over pressure. Would this be a suitable container for making wine? It's probably for beer but......

    Thanks

I use a pressure barrel for wine making but not for primary or secondary fermentation. I filter my wine into the pressure barrel before lugging out to the garage for bottling. Same with beer. They are just too difficult to sanitise for a ferment and also you would end up with far more dissolved CO2 in your wine which would then be more of a pain to get out again without making a mess. 11 quid does seem cheap for a 5 gal barrel though so if you like beer then it may serve you well.

So, good for short term transfer of fluids from one place to another but not, IMO for fermenting or clearing.

    cheers

Are wilkos still doing half price on all their brewing stuff then?

I think It's on till Fathers day.

Just picked up the Muntons kits as well as one of wilko's own 6 bottle kit (only £4) so worth a test.

Damn, I just shelled out for a sack of pale malt. All Grain may be on the back burner for a bit if wherry is that price!!

Also, I did a wilkos 2 can golden ale kit a while back as it was 8 quid cheaper than wherry. Very tasty brew.

I have done the math before. Use the malt - it is cheaper & mucho better - just not as quick.

Yesterday, notice everything 50% off on their website. Scooted down to the shop just a couple of hundred yards away from the office, armed with tenners. Sale had just ended. Back to the office, back onto the website - nothing 50% off

I was disappointed to see there was nobody with a spray gun :-)

I went down to Wilco's yesterday to see if the 50% was still on, it wasn't. Of course, the very fermenter I wanted was there (it wasn't the day before when 50% was on (off?). It's the fermenter with the 4" screw cap and hole for bubbler priced at about £14 odd. They must have known I wanted it and kept it hidden until the sale was over.
