  • sloes and green elderberries

sloes and green elderberries are they worth picking/using. have heard green elderberries make very good wine, but fighting with birds to collect ripe ones. only found one tree. Local hedge is full of sloes is it worth collecting them. also an abundance of wild apple trees but limited freezer space.( just bought a secondhand one and its full)

Its a bit early for sloes yet (taste one and see)

    green Elderberries?

there is a variety that is white, but green=unripe (taste one) are there other elderberries that are ripe (ie stalks very very very red and berries very black)

I think I've been picking sloes today the berries seem a little small, like big black currents, and I think the bush is a hawthone... but not sure the difference between that and a blackthorne, they arnt over ripe but not like bullets either...and they taste kuck.... what should they taste like?

Sloes should be around the size of a thumbnail...they should be purple/blue, and when you rub your finger over then removing the bloom on the fruit they wuill be more blue....

if you dont know what you are picking, then DO NOT use or eat them, some foraged fruit is deadly poisonous........

                    if in doubt...leave them be
